Review

You're probably familiar with the story of Lawrence of Arabia, but you might not know about Gertrude Bell, a writer, explorer, and archaeologist who made an arguably bigger impact on the Middle East during the same time period. The film starts when Gertrude (played by Nicole Kidman) is in her early 20s, fresh out of Oxford. Not content to stay in England, she has her dad send her to the Tehran embassy, where she meets a young embassy secretary played by James Franco. Her father won't approve their love, but that's OK, because Gertrude forges on through the desert anyway, helping negotiate the boundaries of important countries like Jordan and Iraq, all while not messing the F around. Eventually she falls in love again, this time with Lawrence of Arabia himself, played by Robert Pattinson, though the two agree not to marry each other. She falls in love yet again with a married man (Damian Lewis) who she can't be with either, but never fear: We still get to see Kidman bathe in the desert by a throng of camels wearing nothing but a white tunic. You know what happens when white tunics get wet? Nips.
