Fear is one of the most enduring elements of effective entertainment. Carnival rides, hellfire sermons, shock-value films--a thrill-happy audience returns time and again to revisit their favorite scary moments, and so do big-time movie directors. Helmsman Gus Van Sant’s admiration for suspense master Alfred Hitchcock goes beyond that of the ordinary fright fan or average imitator. Van Sant’s Psycho (1998) is more than a mere reworking of themes and situations from the original Hitchcock classic of 1960. Gus set about recreating the exact same film, with his cast and crew following the Hitchcock template shot for shot. The result is a double dose of apprehension, like watching the ghost of a wraith looking back upon a future where its murder is predestined to happen again.
