Review

Primeval (2007) is killer-croc agit-prop, the tale of a scaly-tailed rascal waging war on humans in war-torn Africa. He's Gustave, he's twenty-five feet long, and the American news team that's come to capture him is about to sink their teeth into something more than a meaty (if a bit gamey) story. Thinking they're there to cover the world's most prolific four-legged serial killer, they learn that croc-wrought terror is nothing compared to the horror of civil war between the Hutu and the Tutsi. There are no titsies to see in this monster flick with a message, but there's gore galore, and some of it is at the hands of a warlord named Little Gustave (Dumisani Mbebe), who has a rep to match the big, bad reptile's. Dominic Purcell is the macho producer who leads his crew to Burundi, Brooke Langton is ten tons of fun as the on-air lady fair, Orlando Jones is their cameraman who accidentally videotapes an execution, and Gideon Emery plays a crocodile hunter not unlike that late champion of short shorts, Steve Irwin.
