Review

After depicting the male point of view in Chinatown (1974) and Shampoo (1975), skinematic screenwriter Robert Towne switched gears to pen, produce and direct Personal Best (1982). Not only is this a female-focused film, it’s also about lesbians! Set in the world of women’s sports, the R rated drama examines the plight of track-and-fielders Chris Cahill (Mariel Hemingway) and Tory Skinner (Patrice Donnelly). With “skin” in the latter lady’s name, you know you’re in for some serious flesh flashing! In fact, the dark-haired dyke reveals her rack while in the sack with Mariel who bares her breasts and bush in bed! The Sapphic sisters also steam up the screen when they go full frontal in a sauna with their equally-undressed teammates Jan (Pam Spencer), Karen (Jan Glotzer), Maureen (Emily Dole), Nadia ‘Pooch’ Anderson (Jodi Anderson), Penny Brill (Kari G. Peyton), Sheila (Martha Watson), and Tanya (Maren Seidler). Perhaps that’s why the flick made it into the American Film Institute’s Top 10 Sports Films list. The movie also includes Scott Glenn, Luana Anders, and lots of lesbionic action on and off the field! As the leading lezzies compete for a chance at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, their characters experience competitive tension between themsevles. Obviously, they lack the advantage male viewers have to come out in front at relieving tension! In other words, this sporty pic will have you sporting a hard-on as you begin your own workout. When it comes to scoring with oneself, Personal Best may be your personal best!
