It is safe to assume that if an esteemed cardinal in the Roman Catholic Church were to learn that he had only a year to live, and also received news that same day that he was the unwitting progenitor of an illegitimate granddaughter, complications would ensue. Such is the drama-rich conceit of Padre Nuestro (1985), a Spanish take on the human comedy that is rich in good intentions and grand designs that go astray. People, it seems, simply refuse to do what someone who knows better tells them they should do. Living thirty years in the Vatican may have prepared His Excellence for paradise, but in the world of earthly concerns, he lands between a rock and that hard place that occasionally houses all the dreams and desires of the human heart.
