Marriage ceremonies and funerals are when family folk who have managed to avoid one another on all other occasions finally get together. The potential for awkward encounters is slightly diminished at funerals, since one of the kin in attendance is not fully present. On the other hand, as in Once Upon a Wedding (2005), the occasion does arise that even the bride-to-be would prefer to avoid the company of her altar-bound groom. Complications are only exacerbated by the young lady’s father being not only the reigning monarch of his family but also the commandante of the island upon which the marriage is to be consecrated. Several vows are taken in Once Upon a Wedding, some more binding that the expected ones.
