Review

In the Italian cult oddity Oh Serafina (1976), a wealthy industrialist (Renato Pozzetto) finds his philanthropic efforts rewarded by a wife (Angelica Ippolito) who furiously plots his demise. Maliciously committed to a mental institution, the ex-captain of industry falls hard for the beautiful Serafina (Dalila Di Lazzaro), a woman who was similarly shut away under false pretenses. On its face, Alberto Lattuada’s film is a romantic melodrama, but that characterization masks the work’s exploitative bent. Di Lazzaro’s character is prone to instances of terrifying masochism in scenes that border on skingoria. Ippolito is more conventionally sexy in a couple of ravishing encounters with men about town.
