Set in a miserable apartment complex full of miserable people, The Toolbox Murders (1978) stars Cameron Mitchell as a distraught dad avenging his daughter’s death at the hands of a drunk driver by . . . well, killing gorgeous gals with assorted power tools. There’s gotta be some logic in there somewhere. This sleazy classic is actually full of great performances and some stylistic verve. There are also some very bright and shiny femme victims. You’ll be hauling out your hammer while Marciee Drake gets out of a wet T-shirt. Future ’80s porn star Kelly Nichols—billed here as “Marianne Walter”—also proves her potential with a pre-massacre masturbation scene set in her soapy bathtub. It’ll make any man want to be a plumber’s helper!

Easy Rider (1969)—Blu-Ray

Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda are far-out hippies on choppers who set out to find America—and sell a lot of cocaine—in the classic Easy Rider (1969). Along the way they meet rednecks and turn on a then unknown Jack Nicholson to the wonders of weed. This low-budget sleeper came from nowhere to become a huge box-office hit and single-handedly spawned the biker genre. It's heavy existential ending may bum your high, but scenes like Sabrina Scharf skinny-dipping with Hopper in the commune or a pre-"Mickey" Toni Basil romping naked through Mardi Gras on acid will keep your freak flag flying. Karen Black was also in that Mardi Gras sequence but kept her clothes on.

Much of the Latin sexplosion in international cinema since the 1980s is the product of richly imaginative, affably perverse filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar, who was born Calzada de Calatrava, Ciudad Real, Castilla-La Mancha, Spain on this date in 1949.
