A Scary Movie (2000) for the arthouse set, My Big Fat Independent Movie (2005) is filmmaker Philip Zlotorynski’s ambitious attempt to skewer every notable indie film released in the last decade. From artsy-fartsy camera angles to gratuitous lesbian love scenes, Zlotorynski’s got the Sundance playbook down cold, and references to heavyhitters Quentin Tarantino, David Lynch, Christopher Nolan, and others arrive at a fast and furious pace. Naturally there’s nothing wrong with spoofing the kind of girl-on-girl hotness explored by Lynch in Mulholland Drive (2003)--Zlotorynski gets co-stars Paget Brewster and Julie Strain in on the fun with a bit of non-nude same-sex experimentation.
