Moscow on the Hudson (1984)

Great Nudity!

Review

Forget about Amsterdam’s Red Light District, New York City has Moscow on the Hudson (1984). That is, we get to see some nudity in this dramedy directed by Paul Mazursky. The R rated flick centers around a Russian circus musician named Vladimir Ivanov (Robin Williams). While on a tour of the US, he decides to defect by hiding under the skirt of Italian salesgirl Lucia Lombardo (María Conchita Alonso) in Bloomingdales. That’s not a bad introduction to the American melting pot! Lucia later becomes Vladimir’s girlfriend — and what a girlfriend she is! Not only does this film mark Ms. Alonso’s screen debut, it’s also her nude debut. Yes, the sexy brunette bares her wet breasts in the bath while getting felt up in the tub by a Sasquatch. Wait, that’s Robin Williams! The story also includes a circus clown (Elya Baskin), immigration attorney (Alejandro Rey), Vladimir’s friend Lionel Witherspoon (Cleavant Derricks), KGB member Boris (Savely Kramarov) and Lev played by stand-up comedian Yakov Smirnoff. Chances are your groin will be standing up for Olga Talyn. As Svetlana, Ms. Talyn gives us boobs and pubes while speaking Russian and hopping atop Mork’s dork. Too bad the skintastic action wasn’t shot under the bright lights of Broadway because the scene is a bit dark to really ogle Olga’s big apples. When the film was first released, The New Yorker’s Pauline Kael said it is “a wonderful comedy about a tragedy.” But we think it’s a tragedy that this comedy didn’t show more skin!
