Review

Midnight Cowboy (1969) is the only X rated movie to win a Best Picture Oscar. The seedy drama also received the gold for Best Director (John Schlesinger) and Best Adapted Screenplay (Waldo Salt). In fact, when Rico “Ratso” Rizzo (Dustin Hoffman) yells, “I’m walkin’ here! I’m walkin’ here!,” at a car in the crosswalk, we know exactly where we are: New York City — the place where all your dreams come true. That is, if your dreams are heartache, a tubercular cough, a dose of VD and a one-way bus ticket to Miami. Joe Buck (Jon Voight) is an innocent Texan who ventures to the Big Apple to make it as a boy toy yet has little luck until Ratso takes him under his musty wing and into his condemned apartment. Joe’s so inept at hustling, he has to pay for his first trick (Sylvia Miles). Of course, we may have done the same after catching a glance at her gams, side rack and naked ass. At least, Earth Mother Shirley (Brenda Vaccaro) actually pays Buck for the use of his Texas longhorn. Too bad we only get a quick glimpse at her silver dollars. Thanks to the magic of flashbacks, the film showcases the nudity on Joe’s sweetheart Annie (Jennifer Salt). In a disturbing scene, she flashes her nude booty while running from ruffians. In a more tender moment, she bares her breast to Buck as they f—ool around in bed. In other words, this flick sizzles via Ms. Salt’s spiciness!
