Review

Meister Eder und sein Pumuckl is easily the most famous and popular German kiddie-series of all times. Based on a 1960’s radio show, it centers on Pumuckl, a 10-inch (and animated!) kobold, who one fine day decides to make the workshop of cabinet-maker Franz Eder (Gustl Bayrhammer) his home. Eder soon finds out about his secret lodger, and the two quickly become friends. Together the unlikely duo experiences various adventures based mainly on Pumuckl’s talent for creating chaos wherever he goes. Thanks to its extremely sympathetic appeal, loads of humor, and last but not least the late Gustl Bayrhammer in his wonderful Bavarian Film Award winning performance, Meister Eder und sein Pumuckl was always a joy to watch. Although the series was continued after Bayrhammer’s death in 1993, it clearly lost some of its former appeal. What’s special about Meister Eder und sein Pumuckl from a technical standpoint is that it was one of the first productions that combined real-life actors with an animated figure. The result may appear ridiculous by today’s standards, but when you take into consideration that this series had its TV premiere in 1979 it’s quite a remarkable effort! Highly recommended, good-natured fun for everyone! Nudity Report: As everyone would expect from a “decent” kiddie-series, Meister Eder und sein Pumuckl of course didn’t contain any nudity. Nevertheless it is quite of interest from our standpoint since several skinfully acclaimed actresses opted to drop by for a little guest gig over the twelve years of the series’ existence. While Iris Berben, Monika Baumgartner, and Gila von Weitershausen all went full frontal at least once in their career, Michaela May even came very close to providing a gyno-shot in an episode of the crime-series Die Männer vom K3.
