Review

Marseille (2016) is a Netflix original that marked a big moment for the streaming giant: it was their first French-language series. Met with mixed reviews and lasting only two seasons, the show starred Gerard Depardieu as Robert Taro, the long-reigning mayor of France's second largest city. After such a tenure, the last thing he expected was to have to run against former protege Lucas Barres (Benoit Magimel), who he had planned to set up to succeed him. Why the change in plans? Lucas planned to use his mob connections to put an end to Barres' big casino creation plans, which Taro viewed as his tenure's crowning achievement. Robert wasn't going to let that happen, so suddenly it's Barres vs. Taro for mayor of Marseille. Between the mob, Marseille's business magnates, Taro's muckraking journalist daughter (Stéphane Caillard), and Robert Taro's love of cocaine making things quite complicated, this race was always going to get nasty. And since it's  French show, you know there's going to be topless women doing the nasty! This multi-generational approach takes a different spin on political drama, as well as illustrates a core Netflix programming mission: creating audience-specific content for different parts of it global audience. Luckily, Netflix knows everyone speak the language of Skin—so not only does Carolina Jurczak bares boobs multiple times in different sex scenes including one where she offers her rack to Lucas in his campaign office, but we see Stéphane Caillard topless when she has sex on the stairs, in the bathtub, and in the water in front of the Grande Roue de Marseille. That's a tourist ad, in itself! Nadia Fares doesn't go that far, but we do see her in a bra doing it doggy style on a boat dock. It's a shame this one got cancelled because it was full of Marseille candy!
