Biography

Her TV commercials for Polaroid in the ’70s--paired with James Garner--led to Mariette Hartley wearing a T-shirt proclaiming “I am not James Garner’s wife!” Mariette had plenty of guys fantasizing about her performing wifely duties, though, as the veteran actress finally became a household name. It was a strange turn for the talented performer, who’d debuted with an amazing role in the classic Sam Peckinpah western Ride the High Country (1962). After parts in Alfred Hitchcock’s Marnie (1964) and the TV series Peyton Place, Mariette was soon starring in films such as The Return of Count Yorga (1971). Those commercials made her a TV favorite, though, and she went from guesting on just about every hourly drama to headlining her own TV movies. It was in The Incredible Hulk, one of those hourly dramas, that Mariette dressed sexier than she had ever dressed before--at least on screen. In one episode she sashays on the beach wearing a revealing white dress. If you squint hard enough you can make out her fris-Bs! Entering the '80s Mariette remained daring as ever, as seen when she explored lesbian love with Lynn Redgrave in the ABC production My Two Loves (1986). Mariette’s also notoriously outspoken off the set, and she hasn’t let getting older make her any tamer. She recently appeared in the series Fireside Chat with Esther and 9-1-1 and the movies The House on the Hill (2019), Escaping My Stalker (2020), and The Message (2020). She's now 80, but that doesn't mean Mr. Skin can't get a hard-on for Ms. Hartley.
