Ace’s (Dustin Hoffman) grandson comes into town on a plane ticket he thought was sent to him by Gus (Dennis Farina), but neither Gus or Ace knew anything about it. They soon realize that Mike (Michael Gambon) brought him into town as a veiled threat towards his family.
When Ace later goes to visit his parole officer he notices a hit man on the roof across the street, and has to sneak out the back exit to avoid confrontation. When the assassin follows Ace to a coffee shop meting with Gus, the pair are able to draw the hired gun into the bathroom where Gus takes him out.
Ace’s horse Pint of Plain wins the Derby in a photo finish and Jerry’s (Jason Gedrick) bet on the race pays off big. He celebrates back at his hotel with his card dealer girlfriend, Naomi (Weronika Rosati), who brings out her own winners for a roll in the hay. Happy endings for everyone!
Track rat Jerry (Jason Gedrick) won a huge sum of money betting on a longshot, but now he is quickly losing it playing poker. His nemesis, Leo Chan (Dennis Dun), has gotten inside his head and Jerry refuses to accept that he is on a losing streak. Luckily for Jerry, his friends Renzo (Ritchie Coster) and Lonnie (Ian Hart) show up to rescue him.
Ace (Dustin Hoffman) has a meeting with Claire LeShay (Joan Allen), who is running a charitable organization that provides for older horses and employs ex-cons. He insists to his right hand man Gus (Dennis Farina) that he is not attracted to her, but seems very keen on continuing their meetings and donating large sums of cash to her organization.
Rosie (Kerry Condon) has eagerly accepted her role as jockey to new star horse Gettin'up Morning, and wins her maiden race with a time that nearly surpasses the track record. She celebrates by taking a ride on the baloney pony of a fellow jockey, Leon (Tom Payne), but they must keep the relationship under wraps lest their trainers deem it a conflict of interest. We get to see her succulent saddlebags while she celebrates her win in bed. That’s a victory to pop your cork to!
Ace (Dustin Hoffman) meets with his old criminal pals Nick DeRossi (Alan Rosenberg) and Isadore Cohen (Ted Levine) to discuss his plan to buy a racetrack. He intends to use the racetrack, which is the only place people can legally gamble in California, as "Trojan horse" to introduce casino games into the state. He needs Cohen's support since, as an ex felon, Ace is not able to own a racetrack or casino.
It’s revealed that Ace went to jail to take the fall for his former business partner, Mike (Michael Gambon), who got their co-op involved in a drug smuggling operation. Since Ace’s grandson was present when the co-op got raided, Ace took the rap and the prison term.
Would-be player Lonnie McHinery (Ian Hart) is involved in a “slip-and-fall” insurance scam with two ladies, Lynette (Mary-Margaret Humes) and her friend (Patti Tippo). When he tells them he wants out of the scam, they agree to let him go but want to say goodbye with a gleesome threesome in their hotel room. He gets lucky enough to see both their high-stakes suckers before it’s revealed they plan to get rid of him permanently. We get twice the bouncing bountiful boobage as the ladies beat him up before he manages to escape. You’ll be pulling out your stallion for the home stretch!
