Review

The rise and fall of King Louis XV of France is dramatized in Louis XV, le soleil noir (2009). Louis (Stanley Weber) became king at age five after the death of his great-grandfather, although his first cousin served as Regent until Louis came of age. At first Louis was beloved throughout France, but as an adult his excesses in court and penchant for debauchery caused him to lose favor with the people. And while his two favorites mistress, Madame de Châteauroux (Léa Wiazemsky) and Madame de Pompadour (Romane Portail), kept him happy between the sheets, they also enjoyed unprecedented power in the royal courts. Léa Wiazemsky unveils her upturned umlauts, heinie, and a hint of hair pie playing a mouthwatering mistress in this period piece. It’s good to be king!
