Careerists from Joseph Goebbels to the executives of Enron have all dismissed their failures to meet the demands of individual morality by claiming to have only been “doing their job” while engaged in furthering the work of infamy. The go-go weapons dealer whose steady rise through the ranks of genocidal criminals is chronicled in Lord of War (2005) might argue that he is only providing a service, being a consultant and a facilitator so to speak. It is not he who is guilty of blowing the legs off of children, immolating families in their sleep, and annihilating entire indigenous peoples. The culpable parties are the men who pull the triggers and the bosses who order the air strikes and also each one of us who allows his despicable and profitable trade to continue, aided by government sanctions and subsidies.
