British Oscar nominee Kristin Scott Thomas passes capably for a Gallic goddess in Le Bal du gouverneur (1990), Marie-France Pisier’s screen adaptation of her own semi-autobiographical novel. Thomas stars as the comely young wife of an unlikable colonial official (Didier Flamand) stationed in a South Pacific colony. When Marie (Thomas) returns from a horse ride with a torn blouse, locals begin a whisper campaign about an adulterous affair with a country doctor. As the rumors swell, they begin to cause friction with the alleged adulteress’s husband and daughter. Though the truth of Marie’s actions isn’t revealed until late in the game, it’s easy to see why the lithe blonde causes such suspicions. Thomas sashays through her scenes with a supple verve, inviting glances from would-be suitors and moviegoers alike.
