Okay, you know the words. Sing it with me, Goddamit! “SCHLEMEEL! SCHLEMAZEL! HOSENFEFFER INCORPORATED!” That cryptic chant kicked off every episode of Laverne and Shirley, the tale of two brewery-workin’ Milwaukee gals who just wanted to do things their way--Yes, their way! Laverne (Penny Marshall) was the scary-looking one, but at least she went on to become a director. Shirley (Cindy Williams) still pops up in a movie every now and then, such as The Killing Kind or The Creature Wasn’t Nice. Besides the comedic misadventures of the girls, which spanned the 1950’s and 60’s, the show also featured the dense duo of Lenny (Michael Mckean) and Squiggy (David L. Lander). These bumbling idiots were the funniest part of the show and later released an album or two under the moniker of Lenny and the Squigtone. Comedic genius McKean went on to star as David St. Hubbins in This is Spinal Tap and had some hilarious guest appearances on The X-Files. As for the Squigtone, Lander has gravitated towards voice acting for feature animation films such as Jimmy Neutron. Laverne and Shirley enjoyed a seven year run from ’76 to ’83, although the girls appeared earlier in several episodes of Happy Days as well. Mckean and Lander were originally hired on as writers but wrote themselves into the show as Squiggy and Lenny, which were two characters they had created in college. Costar Leslie Easterbrook gave us some sheer see-through love in Private Resort, as well as some wet T-shirt delight in Police Academy 4.
