Forget Marilyn Monroe for just a moment; true fans of classic Hollywood will tell you that black-and-white screen babes never got sexier than Barbara Stanwyck in her prime. For skin hounds who like their dames dangerous, look no further than Stanwyck in the William A. Wellman gem Lady of Burlesque (1943). Babs plays Dixie Daisy, the hot new draw at an opera house turned burlesque theatre. Dixie’s fully prepared to thrill the crowd and empty the cash box in one fell swoop, but first she’ll have to do battle with a prissy diva who’s gunning for the limelight. Wellman’s saucy flick evolves from backstabbing and cat fighting to cold-blooded murder, but even after Stanwyck’s thumbed as the prime suspect, she’s pretty hard to shrug off. Cavorting about in a tight-fitting burlesque get-up, Babs is just the kind of femme fatale that film noir heroes are always losing their cool over.
