Some actresses have to be talked into doing a nude scene. Katie Aselton, on the other hand, had a very different experience: as both director and star of the indie thriller Black Rock (2012), the only one pressuring her to strip was herself.
Katie makes her nude debut in the film beside co-star Lake Bell, who made her nude debut last year on the now-defunct HBO series How to Make it in America. Black Rock is the story of three friends (Bell, Aselton and Kate Bosworth) who come into conflict with some violent veterans after an attempted sexual assault. Lake and Katie lose their shirts 52 minutes in (with some bonus butt from Katie) as the women strip out of their wet clothes to survive a chilly night in the wilderness.
Katie describes the film as an "homage" to rough-and-tumble sexploitation flicks like Last House on the Left (1972), and says that to pay proper tribute to these films, nudity was the only way to go. As she tells Entertainment Weekly:
“It’s me playing by the rules of the genre, and abiding by those rules on my own terms...It’s like, okay I’ll do nudity, but it’s not going to be in a super sexual way.”
But despite Katie's initial reservations (and really, how could two gorgeous actresses nude not be at least a little sexual?) she seems to have warmed to the experience:
“It was so funny. We called it a closed set, but we had such a small crew that the ‘closed set’ really only kept one [production assistant] off,” Katie says. “We were like, Mmm, okay, I guess everyone’s welcome!”
“I was really particular about how I wanted it to be shot. It’s one of my favorite scenes in the movie. It’s beautiful. I mean, we shot a lot more of it,” she laughs. “But it’s not necessary.”
