Music these days, the old folks say, it sounds like a bunch of deaf blokes could make better stuff. The mystery behind the incomprehensible state of modern sounds is largely illuminated in It’s All Gone Pete Tong (2004). This united production of British and Canadian talents brings to life the trials and tintinnabulations of Frankie Wilde, a star deejay with a handicap peculiar to his trade. Whether spinning discs in Ibiza discos or remixing pop hits in posh recording studios, wily Wilde must go to increasingly clever lengths to conceal the fact that his ears are increasingly nonfunctional! Eventually deafness drags the tuneful tastemaker through the gates of depression and obscurity. Does Frankie have any hope for a comeback? Well, just turn on the radio and listen. The ability to hear, after all, seems no longer to be a prerequisite to creating a hit single.
