Cultural heavyweights of the 1920s and ‘30s convene to make a clinical study of human coupling in Alan Rudolph’s witty and sophisticated comedy Investigating Sex (2001). Based on a series of real-life conversations, the film imagines the kind of witty repartee and bold doublespeak that occurred when famous Dada and Surrealist artists such as Andre Breton, Salvador Dali, and Luis Buñuel gathered with an army of steno-scribblers to discuss love, lust, and longing. Fortunately actresses Jacqueline Anderson, Emily Bruni, Julie Delpy, and Robin Tunney keep the proceedings from becoming too clinical by offering graphic examples of the human activity Rudolph puts so deftly under the microscope. You can see Jacqueline's jugglies as she joggles them with her hands in a black and white artsy flick at the 39 minute mark. Emily Bruni looks saucy as hell at the 90 minute mark as she tackles her man and demands that he slip her the reverse sausage. Julie Delpy shows off her breasts at the 1 minute mark as she wiggles into her dress. Robin Tunney shows off her tushy and boobies at the 2.5 minute mark when she gets pegged by her man in bed. Intimate Affairs really lives up to it's name, particularly considering how many times the female members of the cast take off their tops and show off their flesh mounds for our viewing pleasure. It's unfortunate that we don't get any full frontal action, but there's still plenty to admire in this flick. You may feel the need to get intimate with yourself, too!
