Featuring many of the most heralded names in contemporary French cinema, André Téchiné’s J'embrasse pas (1991) chronicles the slow burn of an aspiring actor who comes to grips with his emotional and professional realities. Philippe Noiret stars as Romain, a handsome youngster who was born and bred in a rural hamlet in the French countryside. Restless in his hometown, Romain heads to Paris, where he hopes to procure employment as an actor amidst the hustle and bustle of France’s capitol. When acting gigs prove hard to come by, however, Romain has to work as a hustler for cash––a grueling job whose sole silver lining is the fact that it brings him into close proximity to Ingrid (Emmanuelle Béart), a beautiful prostitute for whom sex is a chore rather than a pleasure. Viewers can still get their kicks watching Béart cool off after a hot night at work, while Héléne Vincent’s paid session with Noiret is equally titillating.
