Is an exploitation movie still an exploitation movie when it’s a parody of an exploitation movie? That’s the philosophical nut to crack in Hollywood Boulevard (1976). Under the direction of Allan Arkush and Joe Dante, the film opens with director Eric Von Leppe (Paul Bartel) shooting a low-budget picture wherein an actress is done in. Enter Candy Wednesday (Candice Rialson), a Midwest beauty ready to break into show biz as a stuntwoman. Of course, the only stunt we’re interested in is how fast she can bust out of her top. Luckily, the blonde ingénue delivers just 29 minutes into the flick when a roving pack of chest-starved weirdos tear open her shirt for a film within the film. The skintastic act lets us view Candy’s nude boobs. Throughout the movie, Ms. Rialson struts her stuff in everything from a bikini to a brassiere. Yet we prefer the scene when she sunbathes topless on the beach with her equally undressed co-stars Bobbi Quackenbush (Rita George) and Jill McBain (Tara Strohmeier). If the name of the latter character sounds familiar, it’s because Claudia Cardinale portrayed Jill McBain in Once Upon a Time in the West (1969). But Claudia didn’t bare her breasts at the start of the pic like Tara does in this flick. Talk about making a great a first impression! Not to be outdone, Mary McQueen (Mary Woronov) flashes her flesh thanks to skimpy getups. If that’s not arousing enough, Ms. George continues to reveal her rack. By George, she’s got it!
