Review

As proof that the cultural experimentation of the 1960s did not end with the close of that decade, review exhibit number one and only, Greaser’s Palace (1972). Directed by Robert Downey Sr., Greaser’s dares to ask the question: What if Jesus came back to earth in the times of the Old West, but as a song-and-dance wannabe dressed in a striped 1940s zoot suit? The answer apparently was: Let’s smoke another half ton of dope and sketch out the next scene. About as linear and conventionally narrative as a Monty Python marathon, but squeezed down into 91 minutes, Greaser’s Palace is one experiment that no amount of social scientists will ever be able to duplicate.
