Review

Gomer Pyle is, to this day, still one of the most referenced (and ridiculed) pop-culture icons of all time. Boasting the doofy Jim Nabors as a kind-hearted-yet-clueless Marine and Frank Sutton as the ever-steaming Sgt. Carter, Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. was a big hit with young and old alike . . . although the actual Marines probably don’t love Gomer all that much. Since the series was a gratingly guy-heavy affair, it was cause for celebration when we got a visit from Elizabeth MacRae (as Lou-Ann Poovie) or Barbara Stuart (as Bunny Wilson). And with character names like those, you know full well that these military mistresses weren’t exactly brain surgeons. We all know that Pyle was the popular one, but we’re guessing that U.S.M.C. really stood for “Underused Sexy Mama Characters”!
