Review

The avant garde biographical drama Goltzius and the Pelican Company (2012) is based on the life of Hendrick Goltzius (Ramsey Nasr), a late 16th century Dutch artist who had a real knack for creating off-color compositions. In fact, his ambition was to produce an erotic version of the Old Testament. Any church-goer will confess there’s plenty of source material on which to pull (emphasis on pull) including Eve tempting Adam with her apples and John the Baptist losing his head over Salome. Yet, like most artists, this porn purveyor doesn’t have the cash to fund his work so he tries to persuade the liberal-minded Margrave of Alsace (F. Murray Abrahman) to give him the loot needed for a printing press. Margrave is intrigued but he’s not totally convinced. Consequently, Hendrick and his cohorts — Quadfrey (Lars Eidinger), Thomas (Giulio Berruti), Samuel van Gouda (Pippo Delbono), Adaela (Kate Moran), Eduard (Flavio Parenti), and Susannah (Anne Louise Hassing) — make money by taking to the stage to perform six Biblical plays, each of which highlights a different sexual taboo. Thanks to the pervformance, we get to view the collective nude boobage, bunnage, and muffage on Ms. Hassing and Ms. Moran. Not to be outdone, Ebola Goyal (Lisette Malidor) exposes her right breast (as if there is a wrong breast). If that’s not titillating enough, Isadora (Maaike Neuville) and Portia (Halina Reijn) reveal their racks and clams. Suffice it to say, these reenactments of the Old Testament will turn you into a real Bible thumper!
