Adapted from Posy Simmonds’ graphic novel of the same name, which itself was largely inspired by the 1857 novel Madame Bovary, Anne Fontaine's Gemma Bovery (2014) is the tale of a man whose literary knowledge leads him to try and help a young woman headed for disaster. The film stars Fabrice Luchini as Martin Joubert, a man obsessed with Madame Bovary author Gustave Flaubert, that quits his publishing job in Paris to move back to his hometown of Normandy, France. Looking to take over the family bakery, he brings along his nag of a wife Valérie (Isabelle Candelier) and son Julien (Kacey Mottet Klein). Nothing happens in the small town until the newly married British couple move into town. They're Charlie Bovery (Jason Flemyng) and his gorgeous younger wife, Gemma Bovery (Gemma Arterton). The publisher-turned baker soon takes a liking to Gemma, due to her beauty and her Flaubert heroine-inspired name. As Martin and Gemma’s friendship begins to heat up, Herve de Bressigny (Niels Schneider), a handsome aristocrat, moves in the neighborhood and sweeps Gemma off of her feet, leaving Martin watching from a distance. But Martin notices so many parallels between Gemma's life, and Emma's life in the book that he becomes obsessed with keeping her from making the same mistakes Emma, her sort of literary namesake, makes. Namely, ruining her marriage and offing herself with an arsenic cocktail. Former Bond girl Gemma Arterton will sweep you out of your pants when she strips down to her bra and panties, baring her beautiful right boob while getting enthusiastically humped in the kitchen by some lucky guy. That’s a gem of a mam! We didn't read the book, but we know we'd like to inseminate in her ovary after seeing Gemma in Gemma Bovery
