Review

The cult classic Ganja & Hess (1972) is a milestone in African-American cinema and fright films alike. When George (Bill Gunn), the lab assistant of Dr. Hess (Duane Jones), gets sliced by an ancient knife from Africa, he becomes infected with vampirism. He then turns the doctor into a bloodsucker, and Hess tries to conceal his Nosferatu-like ways from his gorgeous wife, Ganja (Marlene Clark). That plan becomes complicated as the movie expands into a rich, complex, profoundly symbolic tale of class, race, addiction, and other essential human issues. Marlene Clark gets topless.
