This classic British sitcom was an instant smash in 1975, portraying the misadventures of the world’s worst hotelier, Basil Fawlty, in a way that mixed Monty Python-like silliness with classic UK sarcasm. Based on an actual Torquay hotel manager whom creator John Cleese met while shooting a Python episode, the show ran for two six-episode seasons and has become a cult favorite in reruns ever since. Though it was Spanish waiter Manuel (Andrew Sachs) who brought in the big laughs, it was Cleese’s real life wife at the time, Connie Booth, who played the role of Polly the maid, who brought in a large portion of the male viewing audience.
