Fantastic Fest wrapped up last night in Austin, and after a full week of cramming our eyeballs full of movies 12 hours a day, we're pooped. The last few days of the fest still held some surprises, like the premiere of Paranormal Activity 3 at a much-hyped midnight secret screening (though House of the Devil director Ti West gave PA3 a serious run for its ghost-story money with The Innkeepers, starring Sara Paxton, the following night). Closing night also saw the world premiere of the documentary Comic-Con, Episode 4: A Fan's Hope, spiced up by a cavalcade of spandex-clad cosplay girls.

featherston pa3Katie Featherston returns, however briefly, for Paranormal Activity 3, which premiered at a "secret screening" Wednesday night under tight security (audience-goers were searched and had to pass through metal detectors to enter the theater). A prequel to the prequel Paranormal Activity 2, PA3 begins in the present but is mostly set in the ghost-ridden Rey sisters' childhood. Other than its 80's set design, PA3 doesn't deviate from the formula of the first two films and isn't going to convert anyone who isn't already a fan. Still, fans of the series will be entertained by the movie's plentiful, well-crafted scares, and guys will be slappy to see Katie in a men's button-down shirt and panties as she attempts to make a sex tape with her hubby.

paxton innkeepers 2Shark Night 3D's Sara Paxton shone on the last day of Fantastic Fest in the expertly crafted horror flick The Innkeepers. Sara stars as Claire, one of the last remaining employees of a failing New England inn. Claire and her co-worker Luke (Pat Healy) spend their long, empty shifts investigating the inn's supernatural legends, first as a joke but with increasing urgency as the ghostly coincidences begin to pile up. Paxton turns in an utterly charming performance, especially in a scene where she bolts out of bed after a nightmare wearing only panties and a t-shirt. Talk about raising the dead!

comic-con leiasClosing the festival was the new documentary from Super Size Me's Morgan Spurlock, Comic-Con, Episode IV: A Fan's Hope. In a marked departure from his previous films, Spurlock doesn't appear as a character in Comic-Con, instead concentrating on six convention-goers who have pinned their hopes and dreams on San Diego one way or another. Sexy female celebs like Olivia Wilde make brief appearances talking about their experiences at the con, and fans of nerdy girls in tight spandex will be in heaven with the loads of cosplay eye candy (like the slave Leias seen at left) on display throughout the film.

Finally, Japanese "AV idol" (aka porn star) Rin Sakuragi bared boobs as a sex doll come to life in Body Temperature, and we got a brief flash of Scandinavian suckle stalks in the Norwegian comedy You Said What?, which re-imagines Takashi Miike's horror film Audition as a romantic comedy. Really!
