In the Canadian social drama Fairytales and Pornography (2002), a courtroom defendant is given a glimpse of a better life before the judge’s gavel falls. Lindy Booth plays Laura, a troubled woman whose wrong choices finally catch up to her when she’s called to stand trial for her crimes. During a holiday break, her attorney invites her on vacation with him and treats her to a champagne-sipping tour of the good life. Of course, all good things must come to an end, and come Monday morning poor Laura must listen while her verdict is announced. Director Chris Philpott lets his camera linger during the woman’s idyll with the lawyer, and the best moments occur as the pair explores the intimate aspects of attorney-client privilege.
