Nominated for a staggering fourteen Goya Awards, Imanol Uribe’s Iberian co-production El Rey pasmado (1991) was somehow overlooked in the United States. Based on a novel by Gonzalo Torrente Ballester, the sweeping historical drama describes the plight of an adolescent Spanish king who’s assumed the throne without much in the way of a sexual education. Although he’s married to a beautiful queen, the immature boy has not successfully consummated his marriage--in fact, he’s never even seen his wife naked. Young Felipe IV’s quest to enjoy every pleasure afforded by his reign comprises the bulk of the randy action in Uribe’s glittering romp. Laura del Sol and Eulalia Ramón vie for his majesty’s lecherous attention in scenes that find them tearing off their Renaissance regalia.
