In El Invierno de las anjanas (2000), a beautiful young woman experiences a nervous breakdown when her beau is killed in action in the Spanish-Cuban war. Elena Anaya stars as the nineteenth-century aristocrat who experiences a whirlwind affair with everyman Eusebio (Eduardo Noriega) before he’s shipped off to the front. When Adelaida (Anaya) receives word of her lover’s death, she’s so inconsolable that she’s placed in an insane asylum, where she grows convinced that her man will return to her someday.
