Don’t Come Knocking (2005) when the van’s a-rocking? That’s not quite the lesson to be learned from Wim Wenders’s lyrical drama about an aging actor’s search for roots, but there are some memorably amorous moments. Wenders reunites with playwright-actor Sam Shepard for a road movie about a celluloid cowboy who discovers that he may have unknowingly fathered a child. Fleeing the set of his latest blockbuster, Howard Spence (Shepard) sets off in search of his ex-flame (Jessica Lange), his rock ‘n’ roll-smitten offspring, and the boy’s tomboy squeeze (Fairuza Balk). In fact, one of the film’s biggest revelations is that ’90s indie starlet Balk is all grown up. Watching her scurry around the bedroom in tight-fitting undies is one gift that discerning viewers won’t balk at.
