Dirty Pretty Things (2002)

Dirty Pretty Things (2002) concerns the goings on at a no-tell motel in London. The place is populated by fringe employees, like Audrey Tautou, a maid, and the black doorman, both of whom are illegal immigrants. The doorman is actually a doctor in his native land and is coaxed into removing people’s kidneys for the disreputable manager to sell on the black market in exchange for a passport. Audrey is tempted, which is good, because it provides the film with its only glimpse of skin. The scene takes place 68 minutes in, when Audrey does a post-shower anatomy check and shows her left dirty pretty thing as she opens up her robe for our viewing pleasure. But Mr. Skin would rather buy a boob! Whatever the case, this movie operates almost like a beautiful poem. It flows easily because of the effortless talent of Audrey Tautou, the story is engaging, and it's surprisingly effecting by the end. It may not be just another hollywood flick, but that's a good thing, right? Sometimes you'll even forget you're watching a movie the world feels so authentic and real. It's entertaining, but manages to confront the audience with the dark side of the society we're living in in a very philosophical way. If none of this is making sense, just go watch the movie and experience one of the best films to come out in the 21st century. Come for the boob shot and stay for the though-provoking cinema. Overall it's a beautiful thing!
