Review

Novelist nogoodnik Woody Allen has gone through three marriages, six psychiatrists, and a boatload of friends, but he has no intention of making amends in Deconstructing Harry (1997), the tale of a man who's better at fiction than at reality. An unrepentantly repugnant guy, Woody mines his experiences to come up with characters, and the various ladyfriends, family members, and well-wishers who end up fodder for fiction are less than amused. When he's invited to a symposium at his old college to receive an award, Woody can't find a single person to drag along for companionship—best friend Bob Balaban is troubled by his ticker, girlfriend Elizabeth Shue has left him for his buddy Billy Crystal, ex-wifey Kirstie Alley won't let him take their spawn, and former sis-in-law Judy Davis wants him dead. He finally hires hooker Hazelle Goodman, tells Bob to tag along, and kidnaps his son, but the road ahead is a hairy one, and things go to hell.
