Review

Darling (2015) is a difficult horror film to pinpoint. We aren't sure exactly what the time period is, for one—it's shot in black and white and there's is no technology to be found, but there is also nothing noteworthy to suggest a certain decade. Then there's the "haunted" element going on. Is the house really haunted, or is Darling really just a psychotic woman with a killing streak? The movie never reveals this secret, and instead just lets the action unfold: A young woman takes a job housesitting for a woman who tells her the previous caretaker committed suicide in the house. When Darling starts having hallucinations and becomes terrifying violent, she's just as confused as we are. Are the hallucinations real, or is it all in her head? There's only one reprieve of nudity in this short, arthouse horror, when actress Lauren Ashley Carter strips down to go topless in a chilling shower scene, but Mickey Keating (the director) makes good use of the stunning cinematography in the movie—it's a great, long look. She's a darling, all right!
