Review

In Cotton Comes to Harlem (1970), two hard-boiled Harlem detectives, “Gravedigger” Jones (Godfrey Cambridge) and “Coffin” Ed Johnson (Raymond St. Jacques), are in hot pursuit of a crooked Reverend. Known for scamming the poor people of the neighborhood with the promise of return trips to Africa on an installment plan, the Revered Deke O'Malley (Calvin Lockhart) heads for the hills with the dough. When his truck is hijacked and a bale of cotton stuffed with $87,000 gets lost in the hunt, Harlem is turned upside down as the detectives, the Revered, and the hijackers engage in head-breaking and often hilarious hijinks to settle the score.
