Popular culture of 1979 was post-hippie, but not quite yuppie; post-disco, but not quite New Wave; and post-Star-Wars, but not quite completely infantilized by Steven Spielberg.

At local theaters (which were not quite all multiplexes—yet), Hollywood continued to present movies for adults: mature stories for grown-up people featuring adult themes, adult story lines, and that most quintessentially adult artistic flourish—nudity.

With home video still a few years in the future, grindhouses and drive-ins surged toward a crescendo, showcasing an explosion of exploitation that was also patently adult but not, to be sure, mature.

Let’s look now at some of our favorite nude scenes from 1979—eleven, in total, in honor of the rating Dudley Moore actually awards to Bo Derek in the movie 10.

Today marks the birthday of legendary B-movie producer and distributor Samuel Z. Arkoff, who is responsible for such master strokes of skinema as Coffy (1973), Thriller: A Cruel Picture, and (1974) Prison Girls (1972). Arkoff attributed his success to his insistence that all his movies should adhere to a formula, which he revealed during an interview in the 1980s.

While I would never presume to question the master's wisdom, I have to admit that, even if it leaves out the first five, I'll watch any movie that has number six. Or at least fast forward to the good parts.

Since February is Black History Month, I've been reflecting on some of the many multicultural mammaries I have enjoyed in the past 25 years. Two of my all time favorites are the incomparable Pam Grier's bountiful black bosoms and milk chocolate mudflaps in 1973 blaxploitation classic Coffy. Also high on my list are the Hershey kiss nipples that topped Cynda Williams's gigantoid gazongas in the 1998 drama Caught Up.
