A conundrum is a special style of problem, like a combination of a riddle and a noose. Any attempt to logically solve a conundrum only complicates the dilemma and tightens the knot. Swinging at the end of his rope is a hapless barber whose sanity is held by the weakest link in all of Chain of Fools (2000). Through no design of his own, the hair-trimmer has come to be the custodian for a treasure trove of ancient coins. This priceless hoard might on the surface appear to bode good fortune, but the loot is stolen, which puts the master of the tonsorial arts, and pawn of fate, in a hard, slippery, serrated place between the thieves and the law. Matters are not simplified when the perplexed barber falls prey to an obsessive affection for the raven-tressed, amply buttressed detective assigned to retrieve the coins at the root of his dilemma.
