Caribe (2004)

A favorite on the Latin American festival circuit, Esteban Ramirez’s Costa Rican drama Caribe (2004) grafts a smoldering romantic triangle onto a tale about a greedy oil company seeking to destroy the country’s ecological beauty with destructive offshore drilling. In the same way that Abigail (Cuca Escribano) and Vincente (Jorge Perugorria) find their marriage threatened by the arrival of Abigail’s sexpot half-sister (Maya Zapata), the denizens of Costa Rica’s coastline find their way of life disrupted by a plundering multi-national corporation.
