Review

You’ll be scared stiff (and get a stiffy) while watching Cape Fear (1991). The Martin Scorsese movie is based on the novel “The Executioners” (1957) and the neo-noir flick Cape Fear (1962) starring Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum — both of whom pop up in the reboot. This time around, Nick Nolte and Robert De Niro take the leads while the supporting cast of actresses make sure the thriller is quite thrilling. Sam Bowden (Nolte) was once a public defender in Atlanta, but has since retired to a small town with a private practice in North Carolina. But 14 years before, Sam represented the psychotic serial sex creep Max Cady (DeNiro). During his trial, Bowden kept a piece of evidence from his client that could have set him free. After Max finds this out and does his time, he becomes determined to settle the score. As such, he tracks down Bowden and begins a campaign of terror against Sam, his wife Leigh (Jessica Lange), their daughter Danielle (Juliette Lewis), and his mistress Lori (Illeana Douglas). The violence in Cape Fear can get pretty skintense, but there’s nothing to be nervous about when Lori and Sam get it on in a bar. Unfortunately, Cady later picks Lori up. But instead of making love to the bra-clad babe, he makes her regret letting her guard down. Despite the film’s gruesome nature, it nabbed Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for Best Actor (De Niro) and Supporting Actress (Lewis). Plus a standing ovation in our pants!
