Popular culture of 1979 was post-hippie, but not quite yuppie; post-disco, but not quite New Wave; and post-Star-Wars, but not quite completely infantilized by Steven Spielberg.

At local theaters (which were not quite all multiplexes—yet), Hollywood continued to present movies for adults: mature stories for grown-up people featuring adult themes, adult story lines, and that most quintessentially adult artistic flourish—nudity.

With home video still a few years in the future, grindhouses and drive-ins surged toward a crescendo, showcasing an explosion of exploitation that was also patently adult but not, to be sure, mature.

Let’s look now at some of our favorite nude scenes from 1979—eleven, in total, in honor of the rating Dudley Moore actually awards to Bo Derek in the movie 10.

No matter what happens, I’ll be glad they’re naked.

Susan Sarandon’s name has been on our lips a lot lately, what with her encouraging her buxom daughter Eva Amurri to get topless on TV.

Besides that, it’s Halloween and that always brings to mind Susan’s Sapphic sex scene with classic French beauty Catherine Deneuve in the lesbian vampire flick The Hunger, recently featured in our 10 Screamingly Sexy Horror Nudes video.

And now there’s yet another reason to contemplate Susan’s Saran-domes.

Websites are reporting that director Jessica Manafort wants to do a remake of the Susan Sarandon-Geena Davis buddy pic Thelma & Louise with The Informers babe Amber Heard and not-yet-naked Leighton Meester, star of Gossip Girl.

This could be good news for those who want to see Leighton make her nude debut.

Let’s just hope this one doesn’t go over the cliff before it gets on the road.

Matthew Kaufman is one of the directors of the new documentary American Swing, available on DVD April 14, which tells the story of New York City’s infamous swingers’ club Plato’s Retreat.

Open from 1977 to 1985, the club was frequented by celebrities like Buck Henry and Mario Van Peebles and featured a buffet, disco, sauna, and a mattress room filled with people having anonymous sex.

The film takes a naked look at the storied establishment and includes interviews with former patrons and lots of behind-the-scenes footage. Matthew recently discussed the film in a phone interview.
