Patriotism expresses itself in many different guises. One loyal citizen might express his love of country by going off to war, another by protesting against the same conflict. Real-life United States Marine and Vietnam veteran Ron Kovic, presented as the hero in director Oliver Stone’s Born on the Fourth of July (1989), is both those men. Literally born on July 4th, when we first meet Ron he's inspired by JFK's inauguration to enlist in the Marine Corps, despite his WWII Veteran dad (Raymond J. Barry) warning him about the horrors of war. His time in Vietnam is a disaster, with him killing a fellow American soldier by accident, then ending up paralyzed from the waist down when he gets shot by Charlie. Returning home in a wheelchair after having performed his duty to country and kin, Kovic is confused and distraught to be confronted by public opinion, which is now virulently opposed to the cause for which he sacrificed his power to walk. Kovic endures the rigors of physical rehabilitation, retreats to a Mexican fantasy land, searches soul and conscience, and returns home once again, this time with an attitude and a mission that are a complete surprise to those comrades who had cheered his decision to ship out and fight overseas. He's going to become a vocal critic of the war, the US Government, and the system that he feels abandoned him. After serving his country, Ron likes to employ the service of prostitutes, which lets us see a bit of pseudo porn in Born. In what was her film debut, the legend that is Vivica A. Fox shows T&A riding one of our wounded soldiers. Thank you for your servicing! But for Ron, it's Cordelia Gonzalez that is worth paying for laying. She shows all three B's as a Mexican hooker that strips down for Ron, before hopping on top of him! Hooah! Get all up in that hoo-hah! Uncle Sam appreciates those mams in Born on the Fourth of July!
