Cheerleader-movie icon Cheryl “Rainbeaux” Smith dies.

After a string of remarkable exploitation films such as The Swinging Cheerleaders (1974), The Pom Pom Girls (1976), Massacre at Central High (1976), and The Incredible Melting Man (1977), Cheryl “Rainbeaux” Smith ruled as the most singularly beguiling starlet of the drive-in era.

Then, when Cheryl vanished in 1982, she became one of cinema’s most enigmatic figures, prompting fans to wonder for decades what became of their beloved Rainbeaux.

Tragically, news of Ms. Smith succumbing to liver disease hit just as Synapse Films began work on a special-edition DVD of one of her most sought-after titles, Lemora (1973).

Thanks to her legion of devotees, though, the legacy of Cheryl “Rainbeaux” Smith lives on. Rah-rah-raw, forevermore.

Many people are familiar with the story of Bob Chinn without being aware of the fact due to Burt Reynolds’s Oscar-nominated performance as Jack Horner in Boogie Nights, as the character was loosely based on Chinn. Chinn began making adult movies in the early 1970s and retired in the late 1980s, only to return for a brief period in the late 1990s and early 2000s. He is best known for the Johnny Wadd films he made with the legendary performer John Holmes. In the enormously popular series, Holmes portrays a private detective who solves crimes in between servicing women with his mighty meat sword. On September 23, 2008, VCX released the original Johnny Wadd, taken from a pristine print, for the first time on DVD. Recently Mr. Chinn took some time out to discuss his movies and life with Mr Skin’s C.G. Hilliard.

Porn purists may have scoffed but, like it or not, filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson’s Boogie Nights is Hollywood’s definitive statement of the shadow industry of X-rated cinema throughout the 1970s and early ’80s. It opened in theaters to great critical acclaim on this date in 1997.

Boogie Nights flashily chronicles the rise-and-more-rises of Dirk Diggler (Mark Wahlberg), a naturally gifted cocksman (loosely inspired by legendary loin-wielder John Holmes) who makes it big (and often) in the jizz-biz during the waning days of theatrically-released sex films, just on the cusp of home video.

Burt Reynolds portrays a disco-riffic hardcore director, while Heather Graham and Julianne Moore are indisputably awesome as the frequently naked female talent.

Also look for real-life erotic stars Nina Hartley, Skye Blue, and Summer Cummings in sexy supporting roles.

Long Lost John Holmes Movie Johnny Wad to Get DVD Release

The late John Holmes, the real life inspiration for the character of Dirk Diggler in Boogie Nights, is about to get a rebirth on DVD thanks to venerable porn company VCX, according to the adult news site AVN.com.

Johnny Wadd, the first in a series of movies mixing sex and violence that star the famously well-endowed Holmes as a hardboiled detective named Johnny Wadd, has never been released officially on VHS or DVD, but a well-preserved print recently discovered in a storage locker has made an official release possible.
