Requiem for a Heavy Breather: Bill Landis, 1959-2008

Sleazoid Express creator Bill Landis was a pioneering publisher who really did change the world (for the better), an endlessly imaginative writer, a performer in hardcore films during theatrical porn’s Golden Age and a projectionist who worked Times Square’s glorious toilet-bowl theaters.

At the same time, Bill Landis was also a miserable junkie, a hyper-paranoid head-case, and a world-class pain-in-the-ass.

And now Bill Landis is dead, at age 49, from a heart attack.

20. American Psycho (2000)

THE SCARY-HOT SKINNY: Adapted from a notorious novel by Bret Easton Ellis, American Psycho showcases future Batman Christian Bale as a 1980s Wall Street yuppie who lives in high style and kills with equally high intensity. In addition to Samantha Mathis sharing her mammaries, Chloë Sevigny and Reese Witherspoon also sexily heat up the screen. Still, it’s Bale’s deadly dalliance with two classy call girls (Cara Seymour and Krista Sutton) that renders American Psycho a skin classic. After all, this film contains the ultimate incitement to lesbian analingus: “Don’t just stare at it, eat it!”

It was thirty years ago today when the often imitated but never superceded Bloodsucking Freaks (1976) (AKA Heritage of Caligula AKA Incredible Torture Show AKA Sardu AKA Sardu, Master of the Screaming Virgins AKA The Heritage of Caligula: An Orgy of Sick Minds AKA The House of the Screaming Virgins) first shocked theater audiences, and it hasn't stopped shocking them yet. Featuring tons of nudity, acts of sadism, perverse sexuality, Chicago native Niles McMaster as football star Tom Maverick, and a dwarf named Ralphus, Bloodsucking Freaks is a must-see for anyone who has any interest at all in exploitation, sexploitation, grindhouse flicks, or shock movies. An interview with director Joel M. Reed also appears in the equally classic and compulsory anti-porn documentary Rate it X (1986). So if you have a strong stomach and a warped mind, don't waste one more second before you watch Bloodsucking Freaks.
