Review

Holding a grudge is like taking an acorn of bile and planting it in the rich loam of the soul. Over the years, roots will take hold, sprouts will shoot up and branch off. Seasons will bring alternating leaves and barrenness to the resentment tree, and eventually the boughs will bear fruit. But, as the sly but ultimately self-bilked Irish farmer protagonist of Bitter Harvest (2001) inevitably comes to learn, not only will biting into a bounty planted in hate leave a sour aftertaste, but the farmer won’t even know how in the devil’s logic the flavor of life came to be so ugly. All this briny disillusionment is reaped while the man walks the earth, free, healthy, and amid a veritable paradise. The movie that delivers this message is a comedy, some might say of the divine variety.
