People who have devoted their aspirations to performing upon the stage or screen tend to wring a tiny bit more drama from the events of their lives than do ordinary folks. The crossed lovers and rebuffed suitors who emotionally pummel one another in Being Julia (2004) all make their living in the vicinity of London’s theater district of the 1930s. A young and ambitious American pretty boy preys upon the affections of a slightly past-her-peak diva of the British dramatic arts. When this woman of substance and experience wises up to the callow Yank’s intention of using her as a stepping stone to a younger, prettier, less-vicious actress, the histrionics of courtship cross over to the hysterics of revenge.
